Abstract:

Objective

To invsetigate the relationship between postpartum depression and gastroesophageal reflux disease and the severity of symptoms.

Methods

A total of 82 primiparas whom completed antenatal examination in our hospital between August 2018 to March 2019 selected as the study group. All pregnant women were required to carry out self-assessment of depression (SDS), anxiety (SAS), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and GERD questionare to investigate and analyze the prevalence of depression, frequency and severity of GERD related symptoms.

Results

The follow-up survey of 2~8 weeks from pregnancy to postpartum showed that the prevalence of postpartum depression [EPDS (+)] increased in the SDS and SAS questionnaires, which indicated that the incidence of postpartum depression was higher in pregnant women with depression and anxiety. The results showed that the prevalence of GERD related symptoms (acid regurgitation, heartburn, sternal pain and sleep disorder) in EPDS group was significantly higher than that in EPDS (-) group (P<0.01) .The frequency of GERD related symptoms was positively correlated with the severity of depression (P<0.01).

Conclusion

The prevalence of GERD is higher in postpartum depression patients, and it increases with the severity of depression.
