Abstract:

Transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA) represents an innovative neuromodulation technique, which evolved from the principles of traditional Chinese acupuncture and electrical acupuncture. The therapeutic effect of TEA is based on its modulation of vagal nerve activity, enhancement of lower esophageal sphincter pressure, anti-inflammatory activity, and amelioration of esophageal barrier function. This modality offers distinct advantages such as minimal invasiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, and the feasibility of self-administration, making it an attractive option for patients and healthcare providers alike. In recent years, TEA has been increasingly utilized in the management of a spectrum of inflammatory conditions and gastrointestinal motility disorders. The present review synthesizes the extant literature pertaining to the application of TEA in the context of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It delves into the methodologies employed, the underlying principles, the proposed mechanisms of action, and presents a comprehensive analysis of clinical research findings. The objective of this review is to facilitate a better understanding of TEA's potential as a therapeutic intervention for GERD and to encourage its integration into clinical practice.
